Mayor Yiannis Karousos has announced that Ayia Napa will undergo some major changes over the next few years, with 17 projects now given the go ahead, at a total cost of € 50.5m. These projects are expected to reach completion by 2022, so there’s going to be some exciting times ahead for this vibrant tourist area.

The goal of the projects is to make some advantageous changes to the area that will benefit both those who live there, and the many visitors Ayia Napa receives each year.

Here are some of the projects that will be starting soon…

 

Ayia Napa mediaeval monastery

The mediaeval monastery is to be fully restored and used for educational and cultural events. This project has been allocated a budget of € 1.5m.

 

Road improvements

Improvement work on the road network in the area will soon be underway, with an emphasis on accessibility for the centre of Ayia Napa, and making the environment more eco-friendly. Initial works have been given a budget of € 2.5m with a second phase allocation of a huge € 8.5m.

 

A new kindergarten

Parents will be interested to hear that a state of the art municipal kindergarten is also planned, with a budget of € 1.6m.

Sea front enhancements

Both the eastern and western coastal fronts will benefit from a revamp. On the west side, the work will encompass everything from the port to the marina, and on the east, from the port to the Konnos area. The budget for these projects is € 5m for the western coastal front, and € 8m for the eastern coastal front.

 

Great new structures

Three developments are planned that will bring some fantastic new entertainment opportunities to the area. An urban park in the Kataspyla area, a municipal stadium and an open air amphitheatre. The allocated funds for these developments are € 2m, € 3.5m and € 3.5m respectively.

 

Underwater art project

To further complement the fantastic diving opportunities of Ayia Napa, a new underwater art project has been commissioned at a cost of € 500,000 and will be in the technical reef area.

 

Improvements to existing attractions

€ 1m will be used to improve and upgrade the paleontological finds cave, the sculpture park and the Mediterranean plant park.

 

A special facility for autism and elderly

The Kokkines area will become home to a € 2.5m complex offering specialised services for people with autism, and the elderly.
